Weekly Blog: 1st to 5th June 2026

This week our focus has been on life cycles.
Activities we have enjoyed include, alongside other child initiated activities, have been:

On Monday we focused on the story The Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle.
We also investigated this story on our tuff tray with the hungry caterpillar story sack. We cut out pictures and made life cycle of a butterfly cycles. We looked at pictures of the life cycle further with our powerpoint based on the life cycle of a butterfly.We enjoyed butterfly painting and had a movement session based on the life cycle of a butterfly.

On Tuesday we started off the morning by visiting Chesterton Primary School where we had a mini sports day supported by some of the primary school students. The children enjoyed racing, egg and spoon races, balancing beanbags on their heads and a three legged race. Later on they enjoyed lots of mark making, counting caterpillars and making a butterfly model.

On Wednesday we focused on the life cycle of a frog. We looked at pictures and learned all about the stages with a powerpoint, we investigated objects and pictures beginning with the letter 'f' on our tuff tray. We made life cycle pictures, and enjoyed cutting out other pictures to make a pond scene. We also enjoyed a movement session based on the life cycle of a frog.

On Thursday we returned to the primary school to repeat our sports day event with helpers. We repeated all of the races and enjoyed the event. At playgroup we moved like frogs, found frogs in i-spy pictures. We looked at rhyming words on lily pads and hunted for frogs. We made frog craft and enjoyed moving like a frog.

On Friday we focused on the life cycle of a spider. We learnt all about spiders and looked at pictures with our powerpoint. We made spider craft, played positional games with spider pictures. We also looked at rhyming words and did a lot of mark making.

Most activities are available throughout the weeks for all of the children to enjoy.
  • Building with duplo and wooden blocks
  • lots of mark making in various forms: water painting, wipe board marking, pencils, pens, tracing patterns
  • guessing the objects game
  • fine motor skill activities such as threading and using tweezers
  • lots of matching games
  • learning about different 2d shapes and their properties
  • lotto games and puzzles
  • painting and creating some lovely artwork
  • name writing practice and practice finding and recognising own name
  • lots of listening games, songs and rhymes
  • counting games, songs and rhymes
  • listening to lots of stories and looking at books
  • matching numerals to quantity
  • lots of fun phonological activities
