Weekly Blog: 27th April to 8th May 2026
The last two weeks our focus has been based on two themes: pirates and mermaids and magic, wizards and witches.
Activities we have enjoyed include, alongside other child initiated activities, have been:
Week one:
Our adult led activities included:
- making pirate maps, learning about pirates, singing sea shanty's, pirate counting, creating pirate shape pictures and playing a pirates phonics game
- making a pirate headband, a giant pirate boat for the children to play in, playing pirate movement games, role playing pirates, painting parrots and playing rhyming games
- making pirate handprint pictures, going on a treasure hunt, making treasure maps (big and small),making a treasure island giant display and making paper pirate boats
- making telescopes,playing walk the plank,learning about money while coin rubbing,moving in pirate yoga and enjoying water painting
- we also learnt about Vesak, enjoyed lots of phonic games and made pictures of pirate scenes
Week two:
- we learnt all about May day, made spring flower head dresses, practised our motor skills with May Day mazes, enjoyed May Day dancing around a mini maypole
- the children enjoyed potion making outside in their mystical cauldron, they made with handprint pictures, and cauldron pictures, we learnt about capacity with potion bottles, we guessed magical numbers and played wizard maths games
- we did a lot of mark making, made magical models with play dough, played on an obstacle course outside, played ball games, made potion bottle craft pictures, made stick wands and enjoyed rhyming games
- made witches hats, listened to Winnie the Witch stories, learnt about magic tricks, estimated the amount of objects of things and practised for our sports day
Most activities are available throughout the weeks for all of the children to enjoy
During we week we also enjoyed lots of other activities including:
- Matching castle lotto
- Small world castle, knights and fairies
- tuff tray
- lots of mark making in various forms: water painting, wipe board marking, pencils, pens, tracing patterns
- guessing the objects game
- fine motor skill activities such as threading and using tweezers
- lots of matching games
- learning about different 2d shapes and their properties
- lotto games and puzzles
- painting and creating some lovely artwork
- name writing practice and practice finding and recognising own name
- lots of listening games, songs and rhymes
- counting games, songs and rhymes
- listening to lots of stories
- matching numerals to quantity
- lots of fun phonological activities
